重庆市合川中学是重庆市重点中学中历史最悠久的学校，其前身名为“合宗书院”。明朝嘉靖年间 (1531年)，为纪念宋朝理学大师周敦颐而建，距今400多年。清光绪三十年(1904年)，清政府实行新政，将“合宗书院”更名为“合州中学堂”，后又数易其名为“合川中学”。合川中学是重庆市重点中学中单点办学规模最大的学校。学校占地300余亩，校舍建筑面积9万多平方米。现有131个教学班，其中高中89个，初中42个，教职工526人，其中研究员2人， 特级教师2人，高级教师141人，重庆市级骨干教师19人，合川区级骨干教师135人......
